Just had a very productive visit at the dealer today. Did a side by side comparison of Isuzu and Hino. I am totally sold on the Hino. The cab was much more comfortable and the fit/finish is superb. Toyota truck quality. I was impressed. The rear suspension also sturdier. Can't find any complaints on the interweb either. My only complaint is the driver's seat/area is slightly narrower. So Fuso is out.. Hino first.. Isuzu second choice.

from working at a trucking company with a independent shop that services fleets , I can say Isuzus are good ( only thing they come in for is oil changes and brakes , we had a few major problems come in ( blown engine, but it was driver caused (wrong gear Engine braking ) not product and some transmission linkage problems gorilla shifting )

the mitsu's they send to the dealer ( they will not touch them like some Ford products , let the dealer take care of there mess they made ) and parts availability was another issue , the true old fuso (pre daimler-volvo ), were good according to the one mechanic it took volvo and Daimler to mess it up .and then ceribus to really screw it up

as for the Hino vs Isuzu , thats a tough call , Hino been around for years and body rust is what ussually took them off the road ( if you could drive without a cab they would still go ) there engines are top notch .

Isuzu helped Gm design the Duramax ( it was Isuzus design , GM built and then bought the rights to the motor ) and now Isuzu builds Gm's Mid size trucks since they got out of the market . ( GMC has carried there trucks for years before this with good results ) .

If it was me I would do Hino Vs Isuzu , and see which dealer is wanting to kiss up for the least amount of money . because either or your going to get a good truck , . also it helps to find a salesperson who only deals with trucks , not a car guy otherwise they might sell you a truck thats not rated for the job . ( seen that happen many times with Pickups and medium duty )

Well the catch is, this dealer sells both Isuzu and Hino. Salseman gave me a very reasonable same price on either a NQR or Hino195.

well get the person who is going to drive it and let them drive both , the driver will make best decision , if its you then take them out and put them thru a real world drive , like a day at work , highway . residential , tight backing , ect and see which one does better as it shows the defects like poor placed shifter if its manual , or badly placed pedals , dash layout switches and knobs like lights and airbrakes . .. . but if the hino cab is bigger then I would lean that way . small cabs and being cramped sucks specailly after getting sweaty ..and getting in and out .

with us when we bough a fleet at work they let the drivers try the trucks ( OTR sleeper fleet) out and the owner was suprised as they went to Prostars after being in Peterbilts as they rode better and were easier to get around ( also the interior was designed better )

IMO I would leaan towards Hino as they have been in the mid truck business in Japan for many years ( before WWII ) and are more slated towards trucks and only trucks . ( some busses ) .

Yes already took one employee, was a quick test drive. Cab and seat comfort was better in the Hino. Isuzu seats were blah. My only complaint is Hino diver's area is a tad narrower. Hino has more storage in dash but none behind the seats, where Isuzu does. (JagT20n, thanks for the discussion!)

Out of curiosity how are you getting them spec'd out? What type of body? We are going to be in the market for replacing a truck probably next season and I'm really tempted to get out of the trailer pull if possible.

if it was me , I do not like folding seats as in the straight trucks , they would bust at the hinge points or near them often from people trying to cram 20 pounds of crap into a 1 pound bag .. also it it will stay cleaner too as no dirt or mud will get back there from boots . so no chance for the floor or back panel to start rusting too .

As for the discussion , no problem . I doubled over the spec sheets , and the hino has several things going for it , one is the rear axle is farther back which will make it more stable , (2) it has a heavier load weight ( 1000 pounds is 20 bags of herbicide or 100 gallons you would have to leave at the shop otherwise or a extra mower) and I did not know Hino was part of Toyota ( since 2001 ) , so hopefully they take care of that end of the business like they do there cars . ( and they are Assembled here in W. VA ) I drove by my GMC dealer and the GM/Isuzus looked like the front axle was tucked in like a dually , if it is it will be a unstable truck ( duallys wobble like a tricycle as it pushes the front end ) well good luck with your purchase .

gcbailey, look at the Belmay-Strickland vanscaper videos on youtube, that's pretty much what we are doing.

Jag, the Hino comes with driver's suspension seat.. looking forward to that. Thanks for the info and agreed on all points. Might explain why I dislike the font end on current Isuzu.

yes you will like the seat ( its magnetic so you do not want stuff around it ) , one of the first trucks I drove had a buckboard bench in it ( was a olllllllld transtar on the farm , I hated that thing , after 20 miles your butt knew every spring coil and tube in the seat ..
