I'm looking at 3 different mowers from 2 different semi-local dealers. I have roughly $8000 to spend and I'm overwhelmed on what to purchase. I will be mowing between 3-5 acres on a weekly basis and I'm looking for something that will last for several years with little to no maintenance.

Option 1. New 2017 Bad Boy Outlaw 60in with the Kawasaki engine. Price is $7600 out the door.

Option 2. New 2016 Hustler FastTrack SDX 60in with the same Kawasaki engine.
$7600 out the door.

And this is where I'm having a difficult time deciding on what to get.

Option 3. Dealer demo with 90hrs, full warranty, sells as if it was new. Hustler X-One 60in, with the new Vanguard EFI engine. Mower starts, runs, and still looks pretty good. What I'm concerned about is the longevity of the engine and EFI system.

Any and all thoughts appreciated.
Thanks

What's the price on the X-One?

Why are you concerned about the longevity of the Vanguard? Is it because of (1) the brand, (2) the hours, or (3) the EFI?

At this point in time, Vanguard is my favorite engine, so that would be a positive for me. And 90 hours is no big deal assuming all services have been done timely, and assuming the mower is discounted accordingly.

Price on the X-one was around $7800. And it was a factory demo model with 90hrs on it. My only concern really, was that it's the only one my dealer has had and he doesn't really have any feedback on the engine itsself. He talked very highly of the X-one and recommended it over FastTrack SDX.

I don't know much about Hustler mowers so I can't help with any specifics there. But I do know that the 2017 Outlaw comes with the Kaw FX730 or a Kohler Confidant 747cc or the Vanguard 810cc. Out of those 3, I'd take the Vanguard 1st every time, and the Kohler last every time.

The Vanguard 810 EFI engine is an upgrade over the 810 carbed model.

You need to do some research on how Hustler and Bad Boy decks perform on the type of grass you will be cutting. Where are you located? Some decks perform well on southern turf such as bermuda, but not that great on northern turf.

I live in southern Kansas and my lawn consists of a bermuda and fescue mix. My water ways and pasture are all prarie hay and I will mow those a few times a year.

After talking to you and doing some Google searching, it sounds as if Kawasaki has taken a back seat to the new Vanguard. And being fuel injected is just icing on the cake.

Now if the Vanguard EFI is such a good engine, why did Hustler only use it one year before switching to a Kohler EFI option?

Go to your local Deere place and get a Z920m for $8600 and never look back. :) Deere will outcut both of those all day every day (7 Iron). X-One is a solid unit, but the Hustler decks are still just not that impressive.

You should take a look at the new 2017 X-One. It has been completely redesigned with an even heavier 1.5" x 3" frame made with 3/16" thick metal (a lot of mowers with that frame size only use 1/8" thick metal for the frame rails). It has a super simple design with fewer parts than the previous X-ONE and all of the competitors. I looked at one and it is amazing the way they streamlined it for easy service. When you lift up the seat there is so much room you could easily reach down through the mower to the ground. They also stopped using the VX4 deck on the X-One and started using the same deck they have on the Super S. This is a lot a like a pre X-R7 Super Z deck deck and should perform better in northern grass than the VX4 deck. And the best part is they lowered the price on the X-One so you can get a 60" model for less than $9000.

Glad to hear they are moving away from the VX4. Have any pics of the under side of this new deck? If this new deck proves out to cut northern grass better, and more like a V+ or 7 Iron, then I will be more inclined to look at Hustler again.

No, Unfortunately I didn't get any pics of the bottom side of the deck. Maybe later I can take some and post them.

As per the original post, Option 3 would be the best choice if the dealer gives you a good discount. The engine is great, and being the owner of an EFI engine, I love the way it performs and saves fuel.

I love my 2013 Bad Boy Outlaw XP 6100 61Ëť 36hp Vanguard ......better than ExMark/John Deere and never any issues, however I do maintain regularly. It rides smooth and it's fast and the cut is great....it's literally a beast. The most expensive and the best mower I've bought yet.

The Grammer seat along with the suspension on the Outlaw XP is the best ride money can buy!
