I'm sure this has been posted before but I can't find it with searching.
I have an older diesel Walker (94) that I have serviced since new. At least most things. No problem with other fluids as I have always tried to keep synthetic in them. I guess I kinda let the PTO gearbox slip and it still has the original lube in it. My bad.
I do know that I made a note in my books that read (can't find drain) so this never go changed.
A little less than 1300 hours on the machine and I really would like to change the fluid.
Of course there is no actual drain plug in view. So, now what?
Can it be removed via the top "fill plug"? And if so, I also know I shouldn't mix synthetic lube with regular lube so what if I want to put in synthetic?
Thanks for any help.

Thanks, I was afraid that was going to be the answer. At least with the deck boxes I can see down in them while working on them. I always have used suction to clean out the deck gearboxes and no problem doing that. The PTO just has a small hole in the top to work with. I guess I'll suction out as much as I can and then fill with the synthetic.
Thanks again,
Cleve

Cleve, let me clarify. I misread your post. The info I gave you was for the deck gearboxes. For the PTO, at some point, Walker put a hole in the mounting plate that the PTO box sits on so that you can remove the allen plug to drain the PTO. You can check the PTO weldment to see if you have a hole for draining. If not, remove the fill plug or the dip stick and use the suction gun. In addition, as far as a maintenance requirement, the only drain/fill is to be done after the first 100 hours and not again unless a repair is required.

Guess I'll try to look underneath it tomorrow. Sure hope this is one with a drain hole in it. Not too hopeful as the mower is a 1994 and this one doesn't even have the folding deck on it. Seems Walker made lots of "improvements" after I purchased mine.
Thanks,
Cleve

Cleve, just so you know, if your machine has the drain hole, the plug utilizes the same size Allen as used for the plug on the top cover. The bottom and top PTO box covers can be interchanged.

Bummer,,,, No hole.
Dip stick shows the lube to have a little dark color but at least doesn't smell bad.
I'll just suck it out as much as I can and fill with new synthetic. Sure hate to do it that way because you never know if you're really getting it all out. Small enough that I can fill it a couple times before leaving it.

Cleve, you are overthinking this. Take out as much as you can and refill with the gear oil of your choice. I have taken many of the boxes apart and you never get all of the fluid out, even with a hole for the drain plug as the boss for the plug sits high in the bottom half of the PTO.
