I have a John Deere Z997R that the PTO kicks off randomly while mowing. It displays a DTC 003941.31 at times. Also get a 003941.14 at times. Both require the mower to be shut off and restarted to clear. Seems to start after mowing at least an hour. Any ideas?

I got this from JD online manual:

3941.14 PTO On-Seat On. This is a Pop Up … not a REAL DTC.

3941.31 PTO On-Parking Brake On. Release parking brake if intent is to use machine to mow, etc.

Already have that info...doesn't mean a thing to me or the dealer mechanic. Dealer has been trying to fix this for 3 months. Tried replacing the park brake switch. By-passed the seat switch. checked all the wiring and connectors multiple times. I'm leaning towards a computer problem after it gets hot.

Have you checked the radiator and back screen? Make sure that is good and clean. If that mower gets hot it will shut off the PTO but not the engine.

I'm pretty sure it's a heat related issue. It never does it until I run it for a good solid hour. Then it won't go 5 minutes without stopping. Not sure why it would drop out the PTO clutch. Does the computer just monitor engine coolant temp or have a temp sensor somewhere else? But I'm open to any ideas! I always blow it out after I'm finished mowing. I don't always open the hood and blow it out totally because it's such major pain to crawl on your knees to unlatch it. I will do a complete wash out of the radiator and hydraulic cooler before I mow with it next time.

Could be the clutch itself. If adjustable, have ya checked the gap? Wrung it out ?
I would send a nastygram to JD if the dlr ain't helpin ya, right ?

Yeah, it's been said on here a hundred times to CHECK THE GROUNDS !
Good to see ya whipped it's ***, right ?
^^^^^ Sage advice.

Anytime you have suspected electrical/electronic issues, the FIRST thing to do is 'check the grounds'. And I don't mean just visually. Take them loose, clean them, make sure they are tight.

Intermittent or otherwise unexplained electrical issues almost always point to a grounding problem or a short.
