I have an old (80's?) Toro Proline walk behind mower. Someone rebuilt it and put in a 15.5hp motor. After a year of use for me the clutch burnt up on it. I bought an aftermarket replacement clutch and it was different in size but all the manual said it was the correct one for this mower and I didn't really have anything else to go by.
When I tightened the new clutch the engine would not turn over as though it was seized. When I loosen the clutch bolt it worked as it should. I ended up mowing for almost an hour without an issue until the engine stalled. The clutch bolt tightened up. I loosened the clutch bolt and the mower started again but only runs for a few seconds until the clutch bolt tightens.
I'm not sure what to do. It seems strange that I can't tighten the clutch without causing the engine to not turn over freely. I almost thought of getting a longer bolt so it can't tighten too much. Any thoughts on what else I should try? Thanks
