I have a Husqvarna AWD ride on with a Kawasaki FH531V 18.0 engine, done 520 hours.
Motor started running rough about 2 months ago, was fine at full throttle under load but rough at idle and half throttle. I changed spark plugs, cleaned air filter, cleaned fuel filter but problem continued. Fuel is 90 octane and is fresh, always used the same fuel.
It has become progressively worse in last week or so to the point now where it won't idle at all, cuts out. On half throttle revs drop to almost stop, revs then speed up again, revs then drop to almost stop, revs then speed up again, that cycle continues, sometimes indefinitely, sometimes the engine eventually cuts out.
On full throttle the engine runs just okay with blades down and whilst moving, if mower is stationery and blades not engaged the engine gets progressively rough with revs fluctuating even on full throttle.
The engine doesn't miss fire, just sounds like it runs out of fuel, then gets a burst of fuel, then runs out of fuel, etc etc.
Can anyone please give me some ideas on exactly what is causing these problems.

BigFish is right, but if you want to try something easy you could put some Seafoam in the gas. Some people swear by it, some say it is worthless or worse, I have found that sometimes it will dissolve whatever is causing a clog without doing a proper carb cleaning.

Look, google ya up a service manual. FH531V. Carb is fully explained. The solenoid pintle can get crudded up and stick at times. Should hear/feel a solid click. Many posts here about it. Search.
Get the manual !

Thanks ArTurf, didn't take the carby apart, just blew it out. Will do that in coming weeks, been too busy. Meantime a friend who witnessed the engine behavior first hand suggested it might be a bent push rod affecting how the valves operate. Any comments?
