Remember overseeding will not cure a shade problem--but a shade-adapted seed will help--of course. Fine fescue--or--turf-type tall fescue are the usual choices.
Neither will an overseed cure a poor irrigation problem.

I suspect that if aeration were suited for overseeding the manufacturers would advertise this idea, and show photographs with side-by-side comparisons with conventional seeding methods.
Yep. I'm picking seed based on Sun/Shade/Salt:
  • Full Sun - Heavy Kentucky Bluegrass mix (90% KBG)
  • Heavy Shade - Heavy Fescue mix (70% Fescue)
  • Sun & Shade - KBG/Rye/Fescue mix
  • Boulevard with winter salt - Super Salt Tolerant mix
All seed is provided by supplier that blends seed for my area: MN & WI.

I wonder what all those seed boxes are doing on aerators then? Stinger, toro, exmark, etc. all offer a factory seed box attachment.
I like the idea of the seed box if seeding new lawns but the learning curve with a drop type spreader is not for the beginner. You can see where the seed was missed and it uses more than neccessary for overseeding. Hard to calibrate as well but I know many that really like them. We didn't buy the seed box for our stinger I prefer to seed with my permagreen.

Same here, no seed box on my stinger. I use my zsprayer but that seed box making 1 pass to do both is pretty efficient.

Seed box for the stinger is amazing
I bet it is. Seen one at the dealer yesterday, looked sexy. Makes me wish I had gotten the seed box - just for the look. As far as actually seeding goes, I do prefer a broadcast spreader over a drop spreader(main reason I didn’t get the seed box) most of the time.

Why do you prefer a broadcast spreader? I’ve overseeded existing yards both ways and would much prefer a drop spreader. You don’t have to play the wind all the time. No sidewalk cracks growing grass. Also adds no time, instead of going back after the spreader once done aerating.

I feel it gets into the edges and tight spaces better. I also like seeing the seed flinging as I’m spreading, kind of a double check on the rate. I also feel I get a more uniform application by broadcasting but that’s my preference, I could just suck at using a drop spreader. It does take longer not having the seed box no doubt but I‘m cool with that. I run fert with an aerate/overseed so I’m getting the spreader off the trailer regardless. I run the fert last, in my mind it presses some of the seed into the soil - could be soul food but I’ve always had great results so I’m not going to change what’s not broke, ya know.

As far as playing the wind, I’m not trying to fling anything in 20+ mph winds. Under 20 mph winds there really isn’t much “playing the wind”, at least not in my experience.

Have you ever used the stinger seed box? Tight spaces, edges, and uniform application aren’t a concern. I did the rotary spreader for years, it works just fine, but efficiency is king and it’s not even close. As with double checking the rate, you can see the seed drop out of the box, you’ll know right away if there’s a problem. The areas of concern are the same places you can’t get with a rotary spreader either, then I just grab a handful out of the seed box. I bet if you used one for a day and got the hang of it, you’d never go back. Where in the Midwest are you located?

Possibly. Not going to spend $3k to find out tho. I have a push drop spreader.

I’m assuming you’ve never used the seed box? I’d never use a push drop spreader either, agree that’s going backwards. If you’re ever wandering around eastern Iowa you can give me a shout and put one through it’s paces.

Yeah, I bought a drop spreader for infilling artificial turf but have used it on a few 1k sq ft lawns and was less than pleased but for spreading infill, it’s awesome.

I don’t venture into Iowa very often, like once every 5 years. We have some family in Paulina. There is a guy who just bought a Stinger with the seed box about 30 minutes from me. I turned him onto Stinger after getting my mower dealer to become a dealer for Stinger. We’ll all be doing a lot of overseeding this fall so I’m anxious to see the difference between his with the seed box and mine without. I know the efficiency isn’t comparable but end result will be interesting to compare.

You said the soil is soft. so why aerate? aeration is for compacted soils, like on golf courses with tons of traffic, daily mowers, golf carts on fairways, etc. Home lawns shouldn't need aeration. aeration holes leave any germinated grass too deep. holes swell shut eventually and crown of plant is too deep. broadcasting on top of ground leaves it susceptible to drying out or traffic damage. best seeding method is to use a slit seeder to get the seed in the soil and to have some soil loosened by the verticutters for seed not right in the slot.

Here’s a picture from the operator platform, the seed drops down these chutes to keep it going the right direction. You can see it coming out to make sure your rate is good. You also have a sight glass right there to make sure you’ve got plenty of seed in the box.

Thanks. I seen one at the dealer awhile back. What about the space from the outer edge of the wheel to the edge of the box? It’s like a foot or so from edge of tire to where the tines are. That’s the spot I’m talking about.

I’ll take some measurements, but in real world the seed kicks out a little past the aerator tines. I drive with a wheel on the curb or sidewalk and overlap the wheel on the next aerating pass. As far as landscape beds go, you can get pretty close. I can get as close as I can with my LESCO walk behind.
