Hello,
My Kohler Command 23hp with only 500 hours has sprung an oil leak. The oil pan or sump gasket is the culprit. The motor is out and the gasket failure confirmed. But, I see that if you have split dowels, you need to replace them with solid. The question is....do I have split dowels or solid? The dowels do not have a slit in it, where you could pass a piece of paper, but I would not call them "solid" either. Here is a picture.

If you look close, there is a tongue and groove like shaped seam that goes across. This appears to be the updated part number, but is this what is considered "solid"? Thanks.

I posted a picture of exactly what is in my engine. The picture from Amazon is exactly what I have. The question is, is that considered solid? From what I hear, the slit ones actually had a slit that you can slip paper through. I ordered new dowels, but they won't be here until Wed and I want to put this thing back together now, as grass is growing. The engine is a CV-680.

My issue is that the "solid" dowel has a clear etched jagged line, like teeth. That is not my idea of solid. I ordered the part ending in "16" and those appear to have the jagged tooth like "seam". I am getting the impression that the split dowel has an actual split space in it. I really appreciate your help. Thanks.

The 16 has a seam, but it is closed. Is it leak proof, probably not. But when the 13 is installed, there is a gap where the seam is, the 16 will not have a gap. Looks like yours was probably built with the 13, but the replacement part is a 16. The 16 is a little harder to install that the 13 is

It is indeed a 16. I got two more 16s in the mail yesterday and they have the same tooth or tongue and groove etched into them. But, they have no gap and it appears that is what they consider solid. So, I will leave the current dowels in place. Thanks for the help and hopefully this thread will help the next person who is thrown off by "solid" that appears to have a joint in it. Thanks again.
