Hello, I am in Arizona and need some advice.

I applied MSM Turf around my yard to kill off rye grass to help my Bermuda come back in. Problem is I did not know of its potential damaging effects to tree and shrubs. I applied a 0.05oz/gallon application across the entire yard including around all the tree. Bigger trees in include a tipu, orchard tree, silkfloss and Ficus. There are also numerous fruiting trees: Citrus, figs, and pomegranate. This is the first and only time MSM or any other herbicide has been applied to this yard. The application was applied yesterday. No water has been provided to the lawn and it is set to be scalped in three days.

My question is what is the potential damage threat to these trees? What remedies if anything should I undertake?

We have flood irrigation here which floods the yard with about 4 inches of lake water. I have halted irrigation under I better understand what I can/need to do. The trees are extremely important to my family. Are such steps has removing top soil in large diameters around each tree suggested or necessary? Due to the flood irrigation, would a proper remedy by removing all the turd and bringing in new top soil and re-seeding the Bermuda?

Any suggestions or expectations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help!

How many gallons were applied or what was the rate per thousand square feet? how big is yard?
I used 0.05g per 1.3 gallons of water five times. The total lawn is about 15,000 sqft feet but I only applied it to about 4000-5000 sqft before I realized my error in using this stuff around tree. It was not been watered so I am going to rent a sod cutter and remove all the turf today prior to any watering (which comes via flood irrigation). My hope is that this will remove a portion of the MSM with the hopes of savings the trees.

I don't think you need to worry. Yes, it can kill trees and has killed even large Oak trees in cases where it's been grossly over applied.
It doesn't kill all trees. Just oak and some woody bushes.

You're still with the annual max rate for use around trees.( .5 ounce per acre) if my understanding is correct of how you applied it.
You should be good if you have not applied in the last year.

if makes you feel better, you only need to remove sod from around the drip line of the tree.
Again, even if over applied, it's rare it would kill the tree, it will discolor and kill some foliage first. That's a warning to stop using it.

here's a longer thread on MSM turf-

Thank you for your replies. I have a sod cutter that I rented today. Total lawn is about 15,000 sqft. MSM was over applied to about 6,000 ft of that. The rest was un-sprayed. I was thinking of removing ALL of the sprayed turf because maybe the amount would sterilize the soil and then bringing in new dirt and trying to re-seed the Bermuda. Thoughts on this strategy? Or should I just clear large diameter circles around the trees? We have flood irrigation so that is what concerns me vs drip.

Don't reseed bermuda, especially if it was sodded in the first place, just add new dirt, and push with fertilizer
