Tecumseh small engine....new carb, fires with starter fluid, but wont run.

I bought this walk behind trimmer with a Tecumseh small engine. It was not running and the old carb was rusted out. I bought an aftermarket carb (I have had good luck with them) and put it in. The engine still won't run. It does have spark as it starts and runs with starter spray. Could I have purchased a "new" bad carb?

It only starts, runs and quits with starter fluid, which tells me a fuel problem. I started to unscrew the float bowl and gas started pouring out...so I know there is gas in there.

Anything I can do to trouble shoot? Anyone bought one of these aftermarket carbs and have them not work out of the box?

Is gas getting to the carb?

Did you drain fuel tank/fuel lines of the old gas before replacing the carb? Also more likely than not the new carb needs adjusting. Aftermarket carbs usually suck anyway.

I took a chance and bought another $10 carb from eBay. Installed it and it runs perfect! I've had luck with those carbs so I will keep with them for fixing all of the old junk I end up with. :) They serve their purpose for me.

I totally understand buying only OEM, but I bought the machine for $20, the OEM carb is $70 so kind of hard to spend that much more money. I will run with the cheapo carb for a while and see what happens.

I did buy an old Honda Rancher ATV and put in a $300 OEM Honda carb. That old ATV starts up EVERY TIME and runs perfect! It was a beater when I bought it 3 or 4 years ago and has done tons of work on my farm...so yes, sometimes I buy OEM....that is the best stuff! It is all a trade off!

If you cant rebuild a Kehin carb on a Honda ATV thats bigger than 28mm, don't bother trying to work on other carbs.
