Pulling out what little hair I have left! Recently added a new Ariens Edge 42 to my fleet. Using the cheezy and over-priced bagging system, I get a ton of blow out from the right front of the deck. I figured that when I hook up my tow behind leaf vac this would stop happening. Nope. Still have blow out. Added a rubber "shield" to the right front edge of deck, and no help. The deck is rather box shaped at the discharge port, but the bagger kit deck adapter goes into the deck about 12" to create a sweep following the edge of the blade.
Long story short, this mower is a total disappointment. Only 9 hours on it. Any tactful suggestions?

Is the blade below the edge? Low lift on that side may help

I mean it's a residential box store mower. How high could your expectations have been?

Yeah. Dont buy mowers from home depot.

ariens is definitely better than crap cadet, crapsman, and the others, but its not suites at all for commercial work.

when you go with most commercial brands, including ariens “parent” company, gravely, the decks have an adjustable front baffle that allows you to fine tune the deck for less blowout, better performance in tall grass, etc.

The most you can do for your mower is switching to a lower lift blade, which will decrease blowout but also your bagging performance, or, if it has them, taking spacers out from the blades so they sit higher in the deck. That might kill your cut quality though.

Exmark Metro, JD tractor, Giant Vac Giant Mow. Why do you ask?
Anybody have suggestions on this Ariens Edge?
Here is why I asked what mowers you have in your fleet-

In your original post you stated you added an ariens to your fleet. That statement is quite odd. Most LCOs that have a fleet of mowers would not ever add an ariens, as this is a homeowner grade machine. This made me question what you meant by fleet. Typically a fleet may be 10, 20, 50 or more mowers for multiple crews. Commercial fleets will be comprised of commercial grade machines.

Thus I asked what you have in your fleet to determine, if in fact you have a fleet, or if perhaps you were using the word differently than it is commonly used.

I'd recommend only buying true commercial machines in the future and staying away from anything box stores sell.

Sell that ariens and buy a better machine would be my first recommendation ...otherwise learn to live with it.

Good luck and welcome to lawnsite!

Thank you for all the replies. I guess stable instead of fleet would have been a better term to use! Thank you for the welcome. I just sold that POS and will go back to using more reliable brands, especially units with a more durable transaxle. Thanks again. Been lurking for a while here, gleaning reliable data. I should have consulted here before I got that unit.

What does your local dealer sell for mowers?

3 different places
Husqvarna and JD; Ariens, Cub and Gravely; Kubota, Exmark, Gravely and Simplicity.
Considering Husq, Exmark or Gravely on 48" or less walk behinds...new or used.
I don't see Husqvarna discussed much here.

going with a walk behind instead of another zero turn? Why?

I really liked the cut quality I got with the Metro 36 I was using. Although, the Edge 42 was a lousy comparison....and it was putting tire ruts in the lawns.
typically, zero turns under 48” have very narrow tires and rut alot easier.

if your yards dont allow any larger mower than a 42” then i think a 36” exmark turf tracer would be the perfect mower for you. Youll get a similar cut to your metro, with reverse capability and a quicker HOC change. As long as your local dealer still carries exmark.

oddly, I’ve noticed 2 dealers near me have either dropped or not taken delivery of exmark mowers in years. The closest one is now 50 mins away.

Of the mowers list to be available locally for you for service in the future, I would recommend the Gravely.
