Looking to buy a new mower between now and spring. I’ve pretty much settled on scag. I own 6 acres and mow 3 of that plus another 3 at my father’s Nextdoor. Generally we mow once a week. I’ve decided i don’t need a turf tiger or a cheetah, and I’m looking. To get the best bang for my buck between the patriot and the tiger cat for a mower that will serve me well for a long time. My property is fairly flat, with most of it being fescue lawn and some field grass that used to be cut for hay.

I would definitely go with the TCII without hesitation. While the Patriot is a fine unit, it is a Prosumer unit where the TCII is a full commercial grade unit built to a higher spec that will give you better reliability over the years. You also move up to the Velocity deck which is arguably the best deck available on any machine. I t cuts extremely well in wet conditions as well, so if you get caught out in the rain, or in heavy morning dew or wet conditions you will have far better results over the Hero deck. The Patriot is limited to a maximum engine size of 27hp, whereas the Tiger Cat can be spec'd with a 36hp which would be a monster with the 61" deck and simply nuclear with the 52" deck... :ROFLMAO: You also pick up a couple mph so it could likely shorten mowing time a bit...time is money. 😉

At any rate, depending on specs you're looking at a $2,000 to $4,000 difference and it would be money very well spent IMHO.

For that size property, I would consider the 36hp Vanguard with the 61" deck as it's only a $600 upcharge over the very fine and capable 26hp Kawasaki, but you mention cutting field grass and the difference here will pay HUGE dividends with the 36hp engine and without a doubt offer the best bang for the buck!!

Are you a veteran?? If so, you should receive a bit of a discount as well.

I concur -- TCII if it is in your budget.

Consider obstacles between which you would want to mow. I used to have a Turf Tiger with 52" deck and now run a TTII with 72" deck, and there are places it simply will not go. Time you might save with a wider deck may be lost if you have to mow those with something else.

I mow a rough, rural area in tropical Hawaii. Most of it would not qualify as grass elsewhere. In places it can be 2 ft long, dense, wet, and coarse. The 52" TT had a Kohler engine rated at 27 h.p. (re-rated I believe to 25 hp since I bought mine). The 72" TTII has a 31 hp Kawasaki. Both engines were fully capable of doing all I asked. I selected the Kawasaki for the TTII because I expected better fuel economy than a larger engine would give and based on assurances that it would last longer. My Kawasaki threw a rod with 307 hours on it making me leery of the brand despite its great reputation.

I'd get a 72” deck with Vanguard 40 hp. With EFI/ETC. Since you cut for your father, maybe he could help with the initial cost. There are times when that 6 acres will need cutting ever 4-5 days. That's when you would be glad to have a 72” deck.

Just an FYI the 40HP Vanguard consumes approx 2gal/hr without a collection system, the 37HP Vanguard is approx 1.5 gal/hr with no noticeable difference in power.
