Intake Manifold Gasket leak...coolant. Poor design between the head and intake. 132K on my 97' and is just starting to leak...for the 4th time. Each of the three previous leaks repaired by three different GM garages across the nation. Heard better things from 8.1L.

iv'e got a 2000 3500 crew cab with 90,000 miles.
the only work done on it was both front wheel bearings,
power steering gear box, and alternator.

i get about 13 on the highway
about 11-12 in the city
8-10 pulling the trailer (20 enclosed)
5-6 pushing snow

Great engine. I have ran an 1988 to 177.700 now Milage is not great but it will pull anything you ask it to. Have had 4600 pounds of sand for pavers in the bed, they just keep pulling. Have never had trouble with leaks. Did have to put a timing chain in it at about 150.000. GM still uses the fibre covered gear teeth so that they run quieter. Carry a spare fan belt. They were NOT a horsepower motor after the government got done with emissions. However with injection they wear much better.

Be careful about the 2000 454. I had one in a dually and it would not run worth anything....I had 350's that pulled better than it. Just be sure it runs strong before getting stuck with it. I have had other 454's and they were great! They will pull the world but usually average about 10 unless you are pulling really heavy or idling a lot.

As for the 8100, they are awesome! Lots of power, smooth, and the mileage is somewhat better than the 454. I owned a 8100 and traded it for a powerstroke. The 8100 pulled every bit as good as the powerstroke with not much more fuel. With a 3.73 rear end I have seen them get about 13-14 highway.

I had the 7.4 in a 1995 crew cab dually and thought it had a lot of power until I acquired a 2001 crew cab dually with the 8.1L. Like night and day. The 7.4 has 240hp while the 8.1 has 340hp. 100 more ponies out of only 42 more cubic inches. It pulls my 26' gooseneck with 4 Dixie 50hp diesels anywhere you want to go. By the way, mileage for me with loaded trailer is about 6 to 6.5mpg.................Lynn

I have both .. a 96 chevy 3500 dually with the 454 vortec and like someone said it works best under a load , it will fricking pull a house off the foundation lol , iTs a 2 wheel drive and i get 9 mpg loaded and 12 highway unloaded it has 87,000 flawless miles and i love it ,it seems like when you drive it its like driving a semi and you need a 40 acree field to turn it around , i also just got a 01 chevy 3500 8100 gasser with the ally tranny and now this thing has got some unbelieveable power . I get anywhere from 11 mpg down to 8 depending on the load only thing is about the allision tranny is you just cant jump in and go it has to warm up just a tad on cold winter mornings, i guess i like the 01 just atad better

Don't know how to make slurping sound on here :rolleyes: Just make sure there are gas stations along your route.

I have a 99 Silverado leather interior dually crewcab with an easy dumper insert. It is smooth quiet and powerfull. It is driven from house to house maybe a mile to 4 miles between houses. You guys that are saying 10 mpg must only be talking freeway driving. It gets an honest 5 to 6 miles a gallon in town.
Of course it would get much better mileage on a freeway but if my route was so spread out that I was doing a lot of freeway driving I would be spending half my day just driving and not making money.

I had 98 regular cab long bed with a 7.4 it did okay bought it with 40,000 miles in 2007 and just sold it with 90,000 miles kinda nikled and dimed me some main thing was had to put all new lifters in. Made about 5-6 pulling 20 ' trailer round town bout ten on the road. Thought it had lot of power till i bought my 03 with an 8.1 it runs better all the way around but must confess it has paxton super charger so cant really compare to close. Fuel mileage little better than 7.4.

My 97 has the 454 in it and it does pretty good, towed with it for a month last year to test the gas mileage, It got 5-6 while towing the 18 footer. It has good power for what it is but my ram with the 8.0 liter v10 puts it to shame while towing.
