“Irrigation Efficiency in an In-efficient world – Real World Variables”

    Anyone else tune in to this Rain Bird webinar earlier today?

    Randy Montgomery presented studies of spray nozzles in real wind situations conducted at the Univerity Of Arizona this past summer. They have a study going on in Florida and another for the winder in Arizona going on now.

    The RB HE-VAN seems to do better than the TORO TPN in moderate wind. I think it might have to do with droplet size but can't say for sure.

    The main thing I got out of it was the concept of "Application Efficiency" or AE

    Volume of water in catch cans
    Amount of water applied

    For instance, their interpreted results show TORO TPNs at 55% AE and RB HE-VANS at 78% AE in (if I recall correctly) 9 MPH wind, where their DU is about equal in a dead calm situation.

    They measured the amount of water applied using individual plot water meters. The plots were 12 x 12, with 16 catch cans on a grid and 16 around the perimeter of each plot. They used quarter circle nozzles at the corners of the plots, used PRS stems and applied 1/2" of water per cycle.

    They had weather stations on the leeward side of plots measuring wind speed and direction, temperature and humidity every 15 seconds. Catch cans were recorded and emptied immediately at the end of each cycle.

    Rain Jet heads would kick every other sprinkler's ass if droplet size were all.
