03 f350 with 5.4

    I am looking at adding another truck. I can get a 03 350 with the 5.4. It needs a new Eng. At 54 k. I'm guessing they didn't change the oil. It will primarily be used as a mowing/spray rig. It is a old Scott's truck I think. It has a spray setup in the bed but needs to be replumed and random parts. Clear coat is gone. Long story short I'm thinking about this being a winter project. Is it a waist of time? What would u pay reg cab.

    sounds like a waste of time to me. 5.4 is a smaller motor for a 350 also

    I had a 5.4 in a 350 and it lasted to 189,000. Plowing and towing a trailer.

    How well does the 5.4 do while towing? I have been thinking about buying another truck and my area is littered with 5.4's for sale, Is it a complete dog while towing a decient sized trailer?? Such as my 18 foot bix tex loaded with 2 60 inch z-mowers and a 60 inch walkbehind.

    A 5.4 has plenty of power to pull 5k with ease. I wouldn't think the truck is worth more than maybe 2k with the blown engine plus w.e the rig in the back is worth.

    I weighed the trailer loaded down with all 3 mowers,blowers,trimmers, gas, hand tools .etc at just over 7k pounds. And i live in a hilly area, so im hesitant to buy a 5.4 fearing it will be a complete pig and barely tow my trailer up the hills.

    I've got a 5.4 on my 250. It does well for what I need it for, you won't win a drag race with it though. I can get around 16 mpg with it and around 12 ish for towing. The most I towed and hauled with it was around 7k combined. It seems when I go up hill with my tiny 1500 lb trailer it screams and the rpm is over 3000 without overdrive on. As far as plowing goes, the most I pushed was a foot of the fluffy stuff and about 7" of wet snow. It handled it very well!

    So if you have lots of hills and your pulling heavy loads, Id look else where. By the time I get up the hill I rushing to catch up with the car I was behind.

    I previously had an 06 F250 Ext Cab 4x4 5.4. Towed a 14k(gvwr) dump with two mowers and misc stuff, probably 5500-6000lbs. Not a problem. Filled that dump with 8000lbs of stuff and 4000lbs of trailer at it did the job, although over its towing rating, and it wasnt to happy. My biggest disappointment with the 5.4 was the dismal fuel economy. Mine was 11.5-12mog with combined driving. Best highway was 13.5. I'm not sure where others get these mpg's of 14-16 unless having a reg cab makes that much difference. Maybe a 2wd. I belong to a ford forum and the concensus is 10-12mpg's. Now I have a V10 and it gets 1, yes 1 mpg less than that 5.4 and has much more power. Back on topic. For a mowing/plowing rig I'm sure it would work fine. I owned that 5.4 for 3 years and 50k miles, never once did i get a combined mpg of better than 12. Towing probably 8-9. All hand calculated.

    3 valves have more HP/TQ (05+)

    as tghe gentleman above said 12 does seem to be the MPG #. Only got 9 with the 5.4 in the van.
