1/2 ton VS. 1 ton

    I know this has been debated lots before, but I still need some input for my situation. In the last while I have looked at tons of trucks. Its come down to either a 2006 F-150 or 2006 F-350 Diesel (both are supercrew). I like the F-150 for its comfort, handling and manuverability. But I like the F-350 for the fact I can pull anything I want. The F-350 is also about 7 grand more. I pull a 16 ft open landscape trailer that weighs about 4700 pounds loaded. If I can get away using an F-150 I would rather buy a 1/2 ton. But I would rather buy the 350 if the 1/2 ton won't pull the load well.
    What do you guys think? What vehicle will end up getting the better fuel economy pulling this load?

    Meet in the middle and get a F-250.

    Agreed. You will tear that 150 apart. Its not meant for work day in and day out. Go with the 250 or 350

    Maybe a 250 or 350 gas. That will close the price gap and be a better matched truck if you ever want a larger trailer. Not really doing apples to apples with a gas 150 vs diesel 350:waving:

    Go with a 3/4 ton truck. you will work a 1/2 ton truck to death wearing out everthing faster. While a 3/4 ton will cost more than a 1/2ton, but less than a 1 ton. Your daily towing will be enjoyable, and involve less headache, yes if you go with a diesel you will win some races too while saving money on diesel fuel.

    Dand right!! Go with a 250 diesel. That would be a waste of a 1 ton.

    What the heck are you talking about a SRW F-350 is very little different from a F-250 except for it has a higher gvw. A F-150 is pretty much a car with truck tires :laugh:

    There is a big price difference between a F-150 over a diesel F-250 especially a 4x4.

    The only thing is if you do buy a 3/4 ton or a 1 ton your not limited to what you can haul or pull. Who knows you might want to buy a dump insert and you need a minimum 3/4 ton with a 8600 gvw.

    Man i guess i was thinking Dually!! Ha! Yeh not much difference in a 250/350 SW. Not even price.

    With the trucks being so heavy tare weight wise a F-250 barely has any "Legal" payload. The F-350 srw has the higher gvw with the same tare weight as the F-250.

    What does a F-250 4x4 regular cab or extended cab diesel P/U truck weigh empty its got to be close to 6900lbs. My 03 F-450 weighs 9400lbs empty.

    You compare that to the F-350 dually flatdecks I used to run they only weighed 6800lbs that was with a 12 foot deck and a 351 gasser. My old F-Superduty trucks were only 8200-8400lbs with the 460 and 7.3 IDI and now my current truck is 1000lbs more.

    Then again the 03 F-450 has a rear axle that is heavier and the cabs are heavier than the OBS trucks.

    Speaking for myself I like the 3/4 tons, my trailer is pretty much
    permanently attached to mine thou I only pull a 12-footer single axle
    and to tow 4500 pounds I would want the 350.

    I don't even consider 1/2 tons in my line of work, they're not made for
    everyday towing like we do and I have always driven a 250/2500.
    But, I only tow a couple of thousand pounds, once I get towards 3-4000
    the 3/4 ton has had enough, and it's not that it won't pull more and even
    a lot more but it is that I would not want to be doing it full time.

    Here's more interesting math:
    Weight wise, my 2wd's curb weight is around 3,800 pounds empty.
    Probably with me and the tool boxes and what have you, 4500.
    Add the trailer empty, 6,000.
    Load two-three thousand pounds of mulch or Ztr and equipment, you do the math.
    Trucks max. tow rating, 10,000 pounds (this INCLUDES ALL weight!!!)
    So you see, that is why for pulling 4,500 pounds I would want a full ton.
