I wont even dare sub this dude.
It's obvious he's got no clue of what's going on.
Are the other ads of home repair, custom upholstery and prescriptions also his ventures??
Just curious!

Check out his work. If he does good work .....sub him. But, chances are he might be around long or might not be dependable.

Ask to see his license and insurance. At $10 a lawn, he'd have to work a long time to make those payments.

Theres a guy in are paper that advertises $7 front lawn $13 front and back. Average size fronts are a 1200, and 2000 for backs.
Thsi lady called me today and when I told her $80 a month for mow and edge, she said I was misrepresenting my self in my ad! She call called the wrong # and thought I was the cheap guy.

One half of me says, "Don't worry about the scrubs that advertise for $10 a lawn. Their work will show and they'll be out of business soon." The other half of me thinks that with this economy and so many people outta work, every idiot with a lawnmower will be advertising for mowing lawns at cheap rates. Will that push down the going rate for work? I think we'd all agree that we'd like to see HIGHER rates, not lower. Get too many of these scrubs going and it will create a de-flation of lawn rates, not good for us.

But, as others have said, you can only worry about your own business and focus on making it better. Concentrate on the factors you can influence, and leave those that you can't alone. It's not worth the energy to worry about it. The customers you want are the ones that will pay for the quality, and don't care about saving $10 by employing a scrub. And those that pay scrubs will get the kind of work they pay for.

I got an aeration job today where I was not the lower bidder. The other guy gave the lady a $10 cheaper bid, but took 3 days to do it. My estimate was in the day she called, along with an aeration brochure and my explanation of the service. She told me that she was very impressed with my professionalism and chose me over the other bidder because of that. That's the kind of customer I want. And despite the fact it's only a small aeration job, keeping her happy and impressing her can influence others via word of mouth advertising and bring in work that scrubs and underbidders CAN'T get.

:D

Those that consider ourselves professionals can only hope people realize that they'll be getting what they pay for. Problem is, by the time a lot of these people realize this, they're in a home and no longer have a yard.

Scrubs and their pricing and often their lack of quality, do bother me. Too many people see that type pricing & quality as the norm.

The problem with most people is they get all upset over this type of stuff. If this is the guy you are worried about your in trouble.
1. He will get only the junk you don't want anyway.
2. His work will reflect his prices.
3. He will not take any good business from you.
4. He will get real busy with junk customers and can't afford to hire more people to take on more jobs.
5. He is not your "REAL" competition.
6. The ads in the paper are NOT the going rate. Your fooling yourself if you really believe that.

Anyone that is upset or bothered in anyway about reader adds to cut grass for $10, has not been in this business all that long and has a confidense problem. More than likely has done similar tactics early in their career.

Get over it!!!

Stop worrying about the small things. Worry about what you can control and what you are responsible for.

Anyone with business sense would realize that this is a loss leader. It is a come on.................Who cuts grass for $10?

NO ONE!!

That is a tactic to get calls. Similar tactics have been used in business as long as time it's self.

The add is most lawns cut for $10. Well what are most lawns? They come to your house for the estimate and all of a sudden your given an estimate for $20. Oh but the add says $10. Your yard is twice the size of the average yard. What? I have the same size yard as everyone in the neighborhood. Yes you do, but where most of my work now is much smaller, so we are going by that. Now generaly that $20 is less than what they were paying. Either they sign with them or close the door for trying to be scammed. 8 of 10 won't sign with them.

Worrying about this is waste of your time. It's counter productive.
