1500 or 3/4 ton trucks

    I have a 16 ft trailer, most of the time 2 mowers. I have always had a 1500, most of the time no problems. Question, Do you think a 3/4 ton is that much better. I know I don't like the gas milage on the 3/4 ton. Any thoughts??

    i have a 1500. if your just going around in the city you'll be fine. it's when you hit the highways that you might want the 3/4 ton.

    i pull a 12' enclosed with a 36" wb and a 52" toro grandstand and when i go down to my grandma's the truck has problems getting up to speed. thats the only time i notice it though. going around the city i'm fine.

    I use a 1995 F150 with a 5.0 and a 4R70W tranny. I've been pulling close to 5,000 pounds with it for close to 6 years. I had a 4,000 pound trailer before that for 6 years. About 70,000 miles total. I've even drove it to MD to pull another F150 back for 325 miles. I've had zero problems except the drivehaft bushing in the tailshaft of the tranny wore out. Cheap to fix. I've did add LoadHandler active suspension, a heavy duty tranny oil cooler and 3.55 Traction Lock (Positraction). I accelerate with the best of them. I drive both city and 55 MPH roads all of the time.

    How was that swap richard on the tranny? Are you on Corral? If your plan on going 70-85mph on the highway good luck with a 1500 with a 4.3 get a 5.3 or 6.0 1500 your way within specs for a 1500 with that light of a load. I'm your with the 16 footer you have brakes on the trailer right?

    Yeah, I'm over there. The swap was easy. My truck uses a tone ring in the rear so the tail housing just pulled right off. It took me longer to get the d/s bolts out. :)

    The milage was not too bad compared to my my 1500 which had the 5.3, got 14-15 mpg. my truck now, has the 8.1, a crew cab and it still gets 11-13 mpg. For the power and stability of the 3/4, I sold my 1500.

    The 3/4-ton will handle a trailer easier in any application, but for your needs you'll be fine with a 1/2-ton. Most 1/2-ton these days aren't 1/2-tons anymore, there more along the lines of how 3/4-ton's used to be 20 - 30 years ago. Most have tow capacities close to 10k, though if I was towing 10k regularly I would want 3/4-ton. But like I said, for your needs, a 1500 will be fine.

    As far as fuel mileage, it'll be bad with both the 1500 or 2500, particularly if u have a gas engine. A diesel 2500 though, particularly a pre-emissions diesel, will give pretty respectable fuel mileage numbers.

    I don't ever consider gas mileage...I have a 2500HD with the 6.0 and 4:10 rear...I need a truck that can tow 10k on a regular basis so that's the overriding factor for me. I learned a long time ago that you're better off using equipment that rated or over rated for a job. For road trips, I just grab one of our other vehicles.

    A half ton will get the load moving just as easy as a 3/4 or 1 ton, however being able to stop and steer with the load is a different story. So is duty cycle, you're not putting as much strain on a 3/4 or one ton truck, it will last much longer.

    I couldn't have said it better. I buy a vehicle for it's purpose, not mileage. I have a car to get around town, a truck to do the dirty work. If I need the extra capability of a 3/4 or larger truck, I'll get one for that reason alone.

    If I'm going away and am bringing a ton of stuff, I won't think twice about which vehicle to take. The car can seat five and have some room for luggage, sure, where as my Durango can haul 7 folks, is more comfortable when laden and can tow a trailer with the luggage should I need it. If I bought a 3/4 truck just for the sake of it being a daily driver, I'd admit myself to my family doctor so he can refer me to a psychiatrist.
