I have a Great Dane 17hp 48" ZTR. When I cut it off, I get one hell of a backfire pop. I only have 5 hrs on this new machine. Any suggestions? It does this no matter where the throttle is when the key is turned off. I can put it on choke and turn it off and it does it, and I can throttle all the way down and it does it when I turn it off........

I've got an 18 hp Kawi and it'll backfire REALLY loud when you shut it off at full throttle. My employee has done that not me.

Let it sit idleing for a minute or two before you shut it off.

I too go with the letting the machine idle for a 1-2 minutes and this really cuts down on the backfiring.

Does it have a low throttle shut off valve or high throttle shut off?
Maybe you need hotter plugs. In my 21 hp kaw. on my exmark that kept backfiring I needed to let it cool for a minute or 2 then take it to half throttle and it never backfired from then on.

Let it Idle for a couple minutes, that should help...

I also have the 17hp KAWI on my new TTHP and if I don't let it idle for about 30 secs to 1 min. it will backfire. My 18hp KOHLER is the opposite.
