I was looking at the new exmark catalog and saw that the tthps 48" now have a 19hp. Is that a little of a overkill? I have a 15 and maybe could use a 17hp maybe once a month. Isnt this just goingtoo increase the cost more on top of steel?

Prolly costs eXmark very little to add the ponies.
Give me the choice, I'd rather have the 19hp.

I wouldn't be worried about having too much hp, the alternative is usually more of a problem. I just bought an '04 48"TTHP with the 17 KAW. I think it will be enough hp, but wouldn't be opposed to a little more.

Finally exmark is starting to listen but 21hp would have been better. I got tired of waiting for enough hp on a 48" deck last year so I bought the hustler super walkbehind. (hp was 1 of many reasons) I would have been happy with 21hp but my mower has 23hp on a 48" deck and I am very happy. I can mow with double blades and a sulky at a nice speed and not have any problems with heavy grass. Iv'e ran 14hp 48" mowers and they did OK walking in good conditions (light growth and dry grass) but when the going gets tough the extra hp is really nice to have and worth the extra cost for me.

IMO you can never have too much hp because the time will come when you'll be glad you have the extra power.
