ive got a 1989 dodge ram 250 with the cummins deseil and it has a busted ring gear, i ve got a brand new starter and i was just wondering how hard it is to change the ring gear and if anything else needed to be replaced when a ring gear breaks?

is this a manual transmission? actually, manual or automatic, the flywheel has to come out, and that means the transmission comes out. if its an auto, you buy a whole new flexplate. if its manual, most of them you drive the old ring gear off the flywheel with a hammer and punch. heat the new one up evenly with a torch, while holding it with some visegrips. when its hot enough, it'll just drop on the flywheel, and as it cools it contracts. dont spray water on it, just let it cool by itsself. im not positive it works this way on a cummins, but every manual trans ring gear ive needed to do was this way. i suggest buying a Haynes service manual before attempting this job.
