The kawasaki 26 hp liquid cooled engine on our new Ferris IS 3000 is supposed to have the oil changed after the first 8 hours of use according to the engine manual but it does not say to change the filter. Do I need to change the filter? I know if I don't the filter will still have some oil left in it which could contaminate the new oil but since the manual doesn't say to change it I don't know what to do.

IMHO, Absolutley. After 8hrs many of the normal shaving from manufacture and break in have come loose and are trapped in that filter. Replace it.
  3. yes, yes, yes, if the filter is not changed, then the oil hasn't been changed, well, that is what my Dad always says.

Yup, the filter on Exmarks is a smaller filter from the factory because it is to be changed with the break in oil change.

The 5 bucks for a filter is well worth it no matter what the recommendation.

Absolutely. There is no better investment of $5-10.
