I took my 20 hp.Kohler model number ch20s to get fixed at the dealer. Its on a walker mower with 330 hrs. on it. It will run fine at high throttle then it starts to smoke very bad, it then throttles down and back up again. The dealer told me that it has a bad carburetor, I find it hard to believe that with low hours that the carb is completely bad and can't be rebuilt. The dealer said that it was getting too much fuel in and was dumping it into the crankcase, thus thinning oil and allowing blow by. Anybody have any suggestions. A new carb is $256.

Check on Ebay. I too have the same walker. There is a seller on there that has had several new Kohler command carbs. They are listed as being for a 18hp but have the same part number as the 20hp commands. I have purchased two of them, one for 64 dollars and one for 56 dollars. These are new never used. I replaced one on one of our Walkers and it runs perfectly. You should be able to swap carbs in 10 minutes max. The dealers price is ridiculous and a rebuild kit is about 50 dollars.

I had a 20 horse Kohler on a Walker, same exact problem with mine. The only problem is, at least its the same on my 25 horse Kohler Command on my Cougar, is that the carbs cannot be adjusted. If you are handy just buy a rebuild kit, they are a little pricey, around 50 or 60 bucks, and rebuild it yourself. Its fairly simple.

If the dealer checked the oil and found gasoliene in it, then check the float level and the needle valve for dirt. You dont have to buy a new carborator. Hopefully it isnt the piston rings. what color is the smoke anyway?
The smoke was white, like I said it would throttle up and smoke then idle down and not smoke, Its as if the governor was going up and down.

I talked to a friend of mine that is pretty handy when it comes to motors. He said that I can get valve seating material from an auto parts store and put it on the needle and reseat it with the seat. Its a fine abrasive that when coating the needle you put it in the seat and turn it, which reseats it or matches the needle and seat for a tighter seal. I haven't had time to take apart the carb and check it out yet, plan on doing it soon. Thanks for all the help guys I'll let you know what it is.

Hello have you ever herd of sucking a rag?? you simply remove the intake supply attachment and throttle the engine up and close the intake with a rag --just enough to bog the engine down a little bit --then quickly remove the rag let it regain rpm then do it again--this will SUCK and contaminants in the carbs needle and seat and the primary fuel supply right down the intake and wallah, all pau, done

I dont think its the carborator, posibly the oil ring might be damaged or the head gasket. take a look at he black tube that goes over the carborator opening and see if there is oil comming out there.
Okay, I found out a few things. The breather tube coming from the intake is blowing oil by into the carburetor. Do you think its the reed and needs replaced. I don't know if its getting too much fuel or not now. It seems that when it throttles up it blows oil, I pulled the hose out of the intake and it quit smoking, so it must be the oil blowing by.

Not sure if anyone else is still checking for this....I just had this same problem. Kohler 20HP would run great for about 5 minutes and then start smoking. Come to find out my fuel pump was down in the motor and was leaking....causing gas to dump into my oil. Replaced piston rings and fuel pump and it runs great! Fuel pump was converted to the outside of the motor....
