I am looking at a 2009 f250 with a 5.4l gas with very low miles on it. basic truck with 4wd. I was wondering what the opinions are with this motor i saw the 13.5 mpg driving on a test drive which hurts but its a good deal. Is that the biggest issue with them? thanks

I have an 09 crew cab, short bed, 4x4 with the 5.4. 27000 miles. I tow a 24' enclosed with it.

It doesn't tow like my diesel and I wouldn't want to go cross country with it, but around town it gets the job done just fine.

The gas mileage is horrible. Do not even consider it if this is a major concern for you.

Not sure if it differs between years but I have an 06 f250 4x4 with the 5.4. I have a down easter dump insert and I pull a 7 x 14 enclosed and I am seeing 8 or 9 mpgs. I don't think if I were to do it again that I would get the 5.4. It's too underpowered. Plus I've also gone through both exhaust manifolds on mine and I only have 50k on it.

Thabks for the replys! Do you know of any upgrades to break 10mpg haha I will be towing a 7x16 enclosed with a dump insert in it. The trucks a pretty good deal thats why im considering it and I figured I could always keep it a yr or two and trade it in for something diesel or a full dump truck and still have a value to it.

The biggest complaints I've heard from owners of Super Duty trucks with the 5.4 is that they are gutless and get terrible fuel mileage. Other than that I haven't really heard any major problems.

I have a 2003 5.4L, 2wd, reg cab. I pull a 6.5X12 single axle trailer, with three mowers most of the time. My lawn service is on tight routes, so don't drive very much (5,000 miles/yr). It now has 47,000 miles.

MPG is horrible, 8-9 MPG, never reach 10 MPG. I drive very gingerly, but lots of stop/go, residential neighborhoods. It has plenty of power for my work.

It has been trouble free, until last Fall. I have an oil leak around the head gasket, and front cover. I was planning to get it fixed, but learned the repair requires pulling the engine, or removing the cab -- probably about a $3K job. I am marking time this Winter, as I drive it very little during Jan - March. The leak is not debilitating, as I need to watch the oil level and top off as necessary (2-4 weeks). I will make some decision by early March -- replace, repair, or continue to drive knowing of the problem.

Maybe some changes were made between 2003 and 2009, to, (1) improve mileage, (2) remedy the oil leak (I understand it is not uncommon). Therefore, take my experiences with that perspective.

Hey there fella, just bought a 2003 f350 superduty... it's got rear dual tires, 10 ft. dumpbox, and the dreaded 5.4... hahaha.. Actually, this one came from auction from a small town's public works department.. Speedometer shows 57,000... I paid 7,000 even and it came with an 8 ft. western pro plow.. Now, is Ford necesarilly my first choice? Not really. Do I like the 5.4 instead of something diesel? not really.. But at that price I just couldn't pass it up... Lemme tell you though,,, I love it! Been plowing with it and it seems plenty powerfull for plowing and I know I won't have trouble pulling my 8by16 enclosed either... Sometimes a smart business decision can trump what we want or desire.....
