    Hi Everyone,

Longtime reader, first time poster from Upstate, NY.

In May, I made the plunge and decided to purchase a 2019 Scag Cheetah 61, with the 37hp engine.

I currently mow a single residential space of 3 acres. No hills, flat.

I've been dealing with excessive clippings that leaves behind an ugly appearance that we are not happy with. I have 17 hours on the machine and do not claim to be a scag master or lawn master. I have done some sanity checks here on my methods. I'd love to get some feedback from you guys.

Do I need to purchase a bagger/clamshell ??? Honestly, I would have thought this mower would not leave "hay" behind. I really do not want to spend another $3,000 on accessories.

    Details:
    - Deck clean
    - Mowing only when grass is dry
    - Mowing every 5 days
    - Deck height set to 3 1/4"
    - Factory Scag blades

    Please see attached photos below.

Thank you for your insight in advance!

    Dan

Can try mowing a bit higher. This provides a bit more room for the clippings to fall into.
Can try some Oregon G5 or G6 Gator blades that will shred the clippings into smaller pieces.

I'm in western MA, I mow at 3 3/4 and this week raised to 4 for the summer heat. I noticed even a big difference in that small deck raise. I agree with @Valk, you should raise the deck to at least 3.5.

I use OEM blades too, no issues in 3 years with the machine. I mow a very similiar property it sounds like, but with some minor side hill stuff.

Since you are mowing a small amount put the mulch kit($300) on and mow CW starting at outside. If it is growing real fast mow often....since you got fast mower.

Raise the deck height . That seems quite low to me. I run all scag at the moment and mow everything 3.5-4.75 depending on the yard

All scags here, and rarely mow that low.

usually mower decks cut lower than the height setting you put them on. while you think you are mowing at 3 1/4" you may actually be mowing at 2 3/4" or something like that. you can adjust the deck or just put the pin in a higher cutting position to offset it.

it may be something with the type of grass you cut. if i mowed every 5 days my cheetah wouldn't leave a single clipping behind even mowing at 2.5"
