Hi I've been in business for the past couple of years and this year I've decided to update my fleet of equipment. Right now all I have left to buy is a new 36 in walkbehind. I just found a great deal on a toro 32 in pro line walkbehind. I've always ran 2 48s and a 36 in my fleet being I don't have many gated yards. Has anyone used a 32 and 36 is there a big difference? 32" Differences:
Cost
Weight
Less HP on some 32"
No Hydro option on most 32"
Narrower drive tires
Probably can't use a sulky on a 32"

On some same brands, a 32" deck takes the same blade as a 48"

Same amount of "trim" usually (deck overhang from rear tire)

Productivity loss is marginal based on most lot sizes that you would us a 36" on.

If using belt drive models only, a 32" is a little lighter therefore it can be manhandled easier. Less wear and tear on your body (although you might have an extra pass or two).

I am sure there is more.

To me a 36 is too big to be small, and too small to be big.

I'm not sure the how big the gates are where your located but almost all gates in northern jersey are 40 in openings. But thanks for the inputs keep tem coming

A lot of the gates in older neighborhoods are smaller. And as mentioned production difference between 32-36 is negligible. Only matters if the mower fits or not. I do a fair bit of broker work, so it pays to be able to get in and get done.

Well said. There are many narrow gates in my area where a 36" will not fit but a 32" will. A 36" wb is a rare site on any trailer in these parts. It is too large for many gates and not nimble enough to double as a pushmower in most applications. I am thinking about picking up a 32" snapper, even though I hate belt drives. The thing is light and has plenty of power. The turfmaster is an option but should of been built with castor wheels. I found it to be cumbersome to turn.

I experienced a cub cadet 21" with castors. It was nice on level ground, but traversing any slope was tough to keep it straight. Front wants to go downhill turning it into a wrestling match. I haven't used a turf master yet.

I run a 36" never had a problem with any gates. I have never used a 32" so i cant speak on advantages. But I will throw log on the fire and bring in the new Exmark 30" walk behind. it comes in at 170lbs vs the metro 32" 421lbs

These are tough calls and there is always a trade off. We often don't get the answer we want until after the fact.

I have both 32 and 36 BOP WB's and each has their place.

Okay guys well I picked up a nice 2008 toro proline 32 in with 12.5 hp kawi today. Really nice shape no rust original owner. Only 430 hours, came with a catcher sulkie extra blades and discharge cover. Don't plan on using the sulkie for this machine so that will be coming off. I paid 500 for it after talking the guy down some so I can't complain can't wait to see it in action after I do a service on it. Thanks for all your options guys!

My route would require the use of a 21 on 9 accounts had I bought a 36. I do 100% of my route with a 32...the 21 collects dust.

I can get my 36" through any gate, some of which are entrances to huge yards. Go with the 36, time is money.

Yep. That is why I am in the market for a 30"-32" to limit the use of my 21". A 36" would be of no use to me either. Too large for my single gated yards and too small for my larger properties.
