'95 F150 4.9 6 cylinder...opinions?

    Hey everyone. Getting back into lawn care and am buying another truck. I have a friend who has a '95 F150 that's in great shape both interior and exterior, basically zero rust, great looking rig. I'm not going to be towing anything and if I do it'll only be smaller trailer with a 36" w/b, 21", and associated hand tools. If I get to that point in the business, I'll probably buy a little bit bigger truck anyway, so towing capacity is not my concern with the F150. The truck has 200K on it, seems like a lot of miles, but I drove the truck and everything functions. It's a 5 speed manual, clutch feels pretty good and the brakes are fine. No leaks whatsoever. Just curious if anyone has had the 4.9 straight six with over 200K and what kind, if any, problems occured? I know that how much care you put into the vehicle drastically affects how long the motor will last, but realistically, could I get 250K without a major rebuild? The truck is only $2K, sounds like a lot for a truck with that many miles, but the truck market here SUCKS. Beat to hell early 80's to even mid 70's trucks are selling for $1,000-$1,500 left and right, I feel this F150 isn't a steal it's just about what it's worth and it looks brand new.

    250K is not un common for the 300 6. They are a great engine for pickups. I have even moved a International H tractor with my 1979 F-150 with an inline engine. No camshaft chain to worry. Sometimes the camshaft gears might loose a tooth or two.

    The 300 is not a high revving engine. Un loaded your mileage should be pretty good 18 to 19 MPG. Its a better engine than the 302 as far power

    With my old 1979 I was loaded with #1000 of tools and grave stone I was able to get 15 MPG.

    I had an '80 f100 with the 4.9l six in it. It was a great engine. It had loads of torque and would pull anything I wanted to, and this was before they went to a FI system later in the 80's.

    This truck died in 1990 from a spun main bearing, with about 250k miles.

    I actually wish this engine hadn't been discontinued, but a dealer told me it had to do with EPA regs and that's why it was replaced by the 4.2 v6.

    If I knew of an old Ford truck in good shape with this engine in it I'd buy it. Your decision is your decision, of course.

    the 300 6 is a great motor lots of power my dad has one he bought new in 76 with over 500,000 miles he had new main bearings put in it once i have a 89 with a 300 6 and it has 150,000 and runs like new the are fairly bullet proof

    Thanks for the info guys, sounds like it would be a no brainer for me to buy this truck. It blue books right around $2K, but I think with the truck market around here it's worth much more than blue book. I have a buddy who is a certified auto mechanic, I'm going to take him with me to pick the truck up and unless there is anything seriously wrong with it I'm going to buy this truck.

    Go for it. i loved mine. it didnt have quite 200k but it did have 145k when i sold it. it out pulled my friends 302 with no problem!

    Keep searching you can find something better. My old man bought a 96 F-150 4.9 6cyl 2wd it was a ex city truck with about 100,000 miles for 4000 canadian. Dads 6 cylinder isn't that good on fuel and he doesn't drive it hard my F-450s get just as good mileage.

    If I was buying a F-150 it would be a 4x4 the 2wds have no traction because the back end is so light. I used to drive my ex-boss's 95 F-150 6cyl and automatic the truck is just like dads.

    The 6 cyl is a decent engine I had a old 79 F-150 4x4 with 4spd truck got decent fuel mileage.

    At 200,000 miles the truck has got to have some blowby (check it by seeing if the air filter is caked in oil) but blowby on that engine at that many miles is somewhat common. There isn't realy anything bad about those engines, I had 4 300 I-6's, one was in an 83 F-250 4wd which I sold at 125,000 miles, another was a 92 F-150 4wd that I got rid of at about 120xxx miles and the other in an 84 F-150 4wd made it 190xxx before it started showing it's age, I replaced it with a Jasper rebuild for somewhere around $1500. It's a tough engine to kill, has good low end torque with a 4" piston and just shy of a 4" stroke.

    The one thing I'd really look out for on this truck is the rear axle ratio, Ford had a bright idea to put a 2.73 rear end in F-150's with a 300 in them and it really was worthless for towing or hauling very much. If it's got a 3.55 rear end you'll be fine. The other thing is the manual trans in that truck is rather wimpy and wasn't rated to tow very much at all, like 2000 lbs or so. It is a Mazda trans with a puny clutch, but I can with experience tell you the truck will tow 5000 lbs or so at highway speeds just fine just stay out of overdrive.

    As far as working on the engine you can do anything short of a complete rebuild without having to pull the engine. The side panel cover over the lifters is prone to leaking oil, the valve cover gasket will probably leak oil too and it may leak oil around the distributor as well, but at least it will keep the outside of the engine from rusting.

    Like I said, I have a buddy who is a certified mechanic, he actually works at a Ford dealership in the shop, so getting parts won't be a problem. I won't be towing much, if anything, with this truck. If I get to the point where I upgrade to a trailer I'll be buying another truck. Probably won't have this rig for more than 2 years either.
