Thinking about buying a 1998 LeRoi 185CFM twin port air compressor from someone I know. Has very little use and he only used it for blowouts the last 3 seasons. He bought it at an auction with 6xx hrs on it, and now it has low 800's. 4cyl diesel, new battery, very little to no rust, new tires, pintal hitch, and 50' of hose.

He's asking 5K firm, so I was wondering if this was a good buy or not? I plan on only using it for blowouts as well.

What motor does it have Perkins or Deere ?

The only problem with LeRoi is getting parts and I think they are rotoscrew compressor. If you only using it for blowouts it probably is good enough.

Ingersol Rand is the best portable diesel compressor you can get.

The seller tells me a Cat, but I was thinking Deere. Are they the same?

I have run Sullair, Airman, and Atlas in the past. Aren't they all rotary screw? Is there that much of a difference between mfg's?

The older LeRoi were Perkins powered this one maybe Cat powered but I think its Deere power.

If your going to get a good deal on it go for it.

Just went and looked at it today. It's MFG date is 08/99 so is it a '99 or '00? Tag on the engine block said PERKINS 3.9L, tag on the Head said CAT. Is this normal?

What is it, a CAT or a PERKINS? Everything seems original and in great shape. No oil leaks or caked up grease/residue any where and didn't seem to be recently cleaned or pressure washed. Has 11xx hrs on it instead of the low 800's I was told. Not a big deal. All filters/fluid changed at the end of blowout season last year. Tire was a little low from sitting since last fall and battery was weak.

Any comments I want to hear before I hand over $5K.

Cat owns Perkins or you can call them Perkapillar :laugh:

Nothing wrong with the 4 banger Perkins they run good and fairly good on fuel. The deere powered compressors are noiser and healthier on fuel.

I would try put a good load on it like a rock drill the heaviest load would be a sandblaster.

My brother bought a brandnew 185 Ingersol Rand compressor for 16,000 dollars for his sandblasting work.

When he was looking at used compressors they were selling really high so I think the 5 grand for the LeRoi is a decent deal.

ok i went over to machinery trader all they had were '95='96 here is one that is selling for $6,900 and older than that one

as far as the engine when i brought mine in for some service the guy that has been working on them for years says that one you can still get parts no problem and that the older ones where the better ones and he did not seam to care for the perkins engine , i can't say good or bad have never had that engine.

considering that a new ingersoll rand go for around $11-12K that's probably not a bad deal.

Seems like a good deal to me. I'd have paid that for a 185 with relatively low hours and the 3 lengths of hose is sweet. I pay about $1500 for rental equip every year for blow outs, so it sounds like a deal to me.

To me, I think I got a good deal too.

I was paying around $800 to rent a 185 compressor w/100' of hose for the month. Most rental places around here wanted $1200 + and the hose was an extra $10-$12 for 50'.
