    I have a 83 Chevy c10 with a 350 and 350 auto trans. It seems to lag when i hook a trailer to it so i am thinking of a rear end gear change. Do any of you have an idea of a good ratio and some tips on putting them in. I don't what anything in the 4:10 or higher because of only having 3 gears it will get terrible gas mileage. I am thinking like about 3:23-3:73 is this right.

    Also while i have your att. it only does about 10 mpg. is this about right or is there something i can do to boost this some?

    What gear do you have now? It sounds like you may only need some more HP. Those SBC's are the easiest engines to do a cam swap on. A 4:10 gear would be my choice, if I was using that truck for hauling a trailer.

    Well a 4:10 will KILL my already bad gas mileage.
    As far as the gears now, they are stock, 2:73 or 3:10 not sure tho.

    The motor is fresh with high comp heads headers and Edelbrock intake and carb, but i am considering a cam change (stock replacement)

    I would consider the cam swap, as mentioned, to get some better lower end torque out of that mouse!
    You already seem to have the added headers, intake and heads, the cam is going to make them all work better. I've used Comp Cams before, and have had good results. Just give them a call, and they'll talk you through your situation. I got a ton more low end power, and probably didn't change my MPG, or -1 at the most. Now this was in a 1970 Caprice, and that thing weighed a ton, but still smoked the tires through 3 gears. You should have no problem with a 350 pulling. And by the looks of your "Vette" in your icon there, you should have no problem swapping out the cam. :D

    Sorry, no help on the rear end, I would just do the cam myself first, as it would only cost about $150 plus your labor.

    I built a 327 chevy (just under 500 ponies). I put it in a 70 GS with 4:56 rear. I got better than 10 MPG with that set-up.

    3:73 is what i use seems to do fine.

    You most likely have 3.08 gears in it now. Chevy put those in a lot of half ton pickups. I would go to a 3.73 . I have 4.10 in my K20 but it has 32 inch tall tires. If you have to ask how to install the gears you better pay a shop to put them in.

    Im thinking a 3.55 or the best all around gear is the 3.73, what size tire do you have on the truck?
