word of mouth. I also have door hangers that I got from NEBS, and when I do a job, I run to all the houses in the immediate area and hang them on the door knobs. but the best and most effective advertising is networking/word of mouth.
I found that ads attract shoppers and word of mouth increases your close ratio and reduces your deadbeat ratio.

Word of Mouth? .................True we havent advertised this season yet but why do you think cgland invested $3800 in having his trailer lettered.

trailer and truck lettering is good too, because people see you around and can call you. I also like jobsite signs. but I assume he was asking about newspapers, phone books etc.

Numerous ways and phone book or newspaper isnt on the list ...

Location, trucks, job-site signs, company uniforms, booth at a home-show once a year and the most important .... happy customers = word of mouth referrals.

Newspaper sucks!!! Sure i get 1 or two jobs from it per a ad run but my closing rate is like 5% or something from news paper adds.
