I added some annaul ryegrass to the fescue blend I just sowed to get some quick coverage. Since this is an annual grass, when it dies back is it the same as adding some organic matter to soil?

Unfortuantely what you will proabbly find that it does is blocks out the fescue from growing and when it dies out will leave lots of bare spots that can then be reseeded in the Fall.

I suppose the silver lining is exactly what you mentioned. All the roots in the grass that died will be good for the soil. So....although you will have lots of bare spots - you did add about 1#/1000 of OM to your soil.
