It would be difficult for compost at top dressing thickness to generate very much heat from decomposition, but it can absorb energy from the sun, think hot pavement and it can have a blanket effect that keeps heat in the soil. The heat from the sun's energy would be much more significant than the blanket effect but both may be minor. Both could work together though, and would be more problematic in the summer months.

Would it not then be beneficial to apply compost in cooler weather for your sensitive grass types?

I've never seen negative effects using compost but I'm only treating northern grass and doing it only in spring and fall. Never during the heat of summer. Hell the heat keeps me from wanting to work anyways!

Phasthound: Even if you don't core, the compost's little "buggers" will make it into the soil. Right?
