Lahanko,

What brand/size ZTR is it that you are having a traction problem with?

A lot can be done with just weight distribution.

The crabgrass this year is making for some slippery rides!

TLS,
We have a Toro Z-Master 150 with a 52-inch deck and 20 hp motor.
The mower just can’t hold the hills. When we have prefect condition, not too wet and not too dry (worse than too wet) we’re ok but anything else, forget it.
I kept telling myself it must be me not the mower but now my wife refuses to use the mower.
Before we got the Z-Master we used a 1994 14hp Toro garden tractor. In order to do this the tractor had to be equipped with rear chains. When the chains wore out I put a pair of bar tires on, Power Trac I think and they worked fine also.
I look at it this way. We can learn to be careful about tearing up the turf with the bar tires but we can’t stop it with the Turf Master tires on it now. It has flat out aggravated me enough.

A question that needs to be answered here is whether or not the new tires will fit on the mower. Originals are 23 x 9.50 x 12. I had to order the 23 x 10.50 x 12. Not a lot of clearance with the gauge wheels on the deck.

lahanko,

I too have a Toro Z-Master, but with a 44-inch deck and also have this problem. I have two workers that will not run the thing unless it is on flat ground. Let me know how the tires work out for you.

So you ordered these?

They are a pretty aggressive tire! My Dad has them on his JD 318 tractor. If its any kind of wet of soft, they will leave impressions in the turf.

Good Luck with them. Let us know how it goes.

I myself am probably looking for something not quite as aggressive as the Super Lug.

From doing a Search, it seems that people are happy with the Dixie Chipper Turf Boss II bar tires. But it also seems like they are made exclusively for Dixie's.

Some people mentioned having success with ATV tires. I went to the Carlisle web site and the "Stryker" tire caught my attention - it has bars in the middle and knobs on the edges - I think the knobs on the edges are supposed to make it turn without tearing up turf as much as the bars. Without having my manual in front of me, I don't know if this tire will fit my Lazer HP.

Any other opinions on turf-saving bar tires?

I have bar tires on one 455, All wheel Steer, and they do not tear up the turf, and do add a bunch of traction getting out of ditches and up steep-steep hills. Just remember to not jump on the power, just ease out of steep places, because - once they start digging, they will dig a big hole. Ease out and let them get you there. Thanks, Brad

Any updates????

I've been thinking about picking up a spare set of tires & wheels. I'm looking to try something similar to Grasshopper's "balloon" bar treads.

I'm just sick of my tires "packing up" with grass.

we have titan at101 bar tires on one of our exmark ztrs 60" deck
and it is the second set, the prev z had them also, you will not
believe that you are on the same machine,we take care of part of
a 30 acre gas tank and pipeline facility, the union guys cut the flat
with their front mount kubotas 4wd, and they will not touch the dikes with their machines, i cut all the dikes with our z, just remember to be carful the increased traction on the hills with new tires can have the tendency to lift the front up. be careful!

mowit12000,

I'm pretty sure that's the same tire I was thinking of. They appear to be a softer tire than the Super Lug. My Z has 20x10-10 tires and those come in 21x11-10. My clearance is very tight and I'm not sure they would work without a little different rim spacing.

I have room to step out the rear track width without loosing all the trim overhang on the deck. Where would a guy get the rims with different spacing to mount the spare set of tires on?

That's a pretty cool idea. Honestly haven't heard of that before but makes a lot of sense.
