I don't mess with a lot of irrigation but there's been times that I've needed a wire locator to locate possible wire damage in a zone.

Is there anything under $100 that actually works?

Before I bought a used locator, I rented. If it’s something you need once in a blue moon, renting might be an option depending on the size of your area of operation and location of tool rental places.

I use mine relatively infrequently but it’s worth it to own it so I have it when I need it. I got a used Armada Pro 300 for under $200 if I remember right. I think anything smaller / cheaper than something like a Pro 300 would be a toy, not a tool. I do smaller systems (wire length 300’ or less) and so far the little Pro 300 is enough.
