Good question. I'm also looking for one. More of a winter late fall jacket. Something not too bulky. I have good layer shirts so I can always layer up.

Something with a great wind break!

I will never buy a Carhartt jacket again. They used to be nearly indestructible but now they're crap in my opinion.

In fact I got thrown out of the store (Mickey Finn's) when I was looking to buy one. My wife had bought me one as a gift and it wasn't the style I wanted, so I went to exchange it. I found the style I wanted on the racks and tried one on, only to find that one of the cuffs was only half attached. I grabbed another one and couldn't get it to zip. Grabbed another one and another one, going through the whole rack of jackets in the size and style I wanted, finiding substantial defects in each of them. While putting one back on the little plastic hanger, the hanger snapped in two. At that point there was a tap on my shoulder...it was the manager. He said in a snotty tone, can I help you? I paused a moment before answering and said, yeah, can you tell me where your first quality Carhartts are? He said, all our mercandise is first quality, at which point I began pointing out the flaws in each of the jackets. He called security and had me escorted from the store, with me protesting all the while that I wasn't done yet, lol. I went to a department store and bought a "Justin" jacket for half the price and it has held up well. Since that day I will never buy another Carhartt or anything at Mickey Finn's.

I prefer the jacket length, hooded sweat shirt-style ones most of the time, but also have a heavily insulated coat length one for colder weather. A vest is nice to have too.

    Here's the Justin jacket I bought. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/justin-hooded-work-jacket-insulated-for-men~p~1081p/

Maybe a little on the bulky side, but the Extreme from Carhartt will outlast any of the cotton duck.

Used to go through a jacket a year for my sidewalk crews, i.e. lots of salt ate right through the cotton duck. Bought Extremes one year and they lasted over 5 years.
