I purchased a bee hive tool this summer for deck scraping. I like it better than my putty knives. It's a 10 inch Painted Hive Tool and is made of high quality spring steel. It has one tapered flat end and one curved end for scraping.

Look in your wife's kitchen drawer for one of those little brown plastic scrapers that comes with the baking stones. Lock it into a pair of long nose vice grips, and you're good to go. It won't scratch the paint of the deck, and the grips put it at about a 30 degree angle, keeping knuckles from getting busted.
