I am having a bad time with thatch building up under my Zoysia grass. The whole area becomes spongy, and the mower keeps riding higher and higher, until it digs in and scalps the grass. The Zoysia tends to develop vertical stems which clump up, then fall over. Grubs eventually move in and have to be eradicated. By the end of the summer the whole lawn is full of brown patches and eventually I end up ripping out the grass with a rotary rake in the spring. Is there anyway to prevent the thatch build up? The soil is a sandy loam, and drains very well. I have heard a suggestion that lowering the mowing height to 11/2 inch helps? The mower used is a converted Snapper 26 inch mower with turf tires from a go kart used because it's a fully automatic unit. I have the same type of grass at my home too, and don't want to replace it with St Augustine
