Best way to do business

    I am trying to figure out the best way of doing business. Has anybody every worked with a company in the industry of business consultation? And does that business specialize in our industry or business in general? If so which company? If no what would you recommend.

    they are about the best you can get.

    I'll second Vander Kooi...I went to a one day seminar that my local association arranged. He was great to watch, very funny, and I learned a lot, some was way over my head though. But that seminar really changed the way I looked at my business.

    I could be mistaken but I have always seen Vander Koi as a estimating specialist. Marty Grunder is a good marketing guy and still runs a business. But Business is business and if you want business help I suggest an E-Myth coach.

    Start by Reading the E-Myth book or E-Myth revisited. The thing about a coach is they meet with you on a regular basis and guide you. I had a partner and we used to bounce ideas off one another but it was like the blind leading the deaf and we rarely agreed on anything (hence I no longer have partners).

    The coach asked the right questions at the right time and made me focus and think so I was planning and not reacting. Plus he works with all kinds of businesses large and small. I believe this gives him some unique insight that you would not get from a green indusrty specialist. I have a hard time believing Grunder or Vander Koi or anyone else have a better handle on my market that I do. I wanted someone that was a business specialist.

    Be prepared to spend some bucks. My coach was 5 or 600 per month and we worked together from Jan through Sept and then I just got to busy in the field so we would go on hiatus and start again in Jan. I did this for 2 years and it has given me a strong foundation. I still call him from time to time to get specific advice and I will probably get back on a regular schedule with him a year from now when my business reaches the next plateau.

    Good to see someone asking the right questions. You will make a lot more money asking these kinkds of questions -vs-which blower is best.

    I still get daily messages that are good to keep you head in the game when things are going crazy. Here is a recent message I got and passed on to my Foreman to remind him to look deeper when there are problems.

    Indeed a manager is accountable for the results and performance of the people who report to them. If your people are not producing the results you have set for them it ultimately comes from poor management.

    In a systems driven business, the manager creates the system that will ensure quality results.

    Here are some potential reasons why your people may not be producing the results you want:

    You don't have a well documented system that works in place.
    You have hired people that don't have the skill set necessary to operate the system properly.
    Your people haven't been trained properly.
    They haven't agreed to follow the system and so there is no accountability.
    You haven't identified the results you want accomplished.

    Thanks so far for the great advice. I have read a lot of E-Myth books by Michael Gerber. I have also thought tons about different systems that come into play in all situations but I don't think I have found the perfect one as of yet. That is the one thing I am having trouble figuring out. I am the owner and operator with a few employees and i have found that there is only so much time in one day. I want to grow larger the right way not just tacking on every job that comes my way. I guess you could say I am having trouble delegating. Thanks again and any other thoughts are much wanted.

    that's the hard part...
    you'll need to single out someone who is cabeable of leading and release more and more to him.... keep in mind that he'll screw up.. but if he learns from his mistakes, and tries not to make the same one twice then you have found the right person to help your business grow.

    Some good info, I have found a few guys that are good, some green industry some not. Check out JPhorizons.com- management info, Marty Grunder- Marketing, Kevin Kehoe- estimatying/ management, Jay Goltz overall business info, E-myth, etc. I find it very helpful to look at a few guys and gleen ideas from each one to make your own. You probably won't find one school of thought that fits you perfectly, just learn as much as you can, all knowledge is good!
