What do you guys use to cut down big clumps of ornamental grass?
How big are these clumps? We cut our liriope back just before the new sprouts form. We do not use a grass trimmer either. This will cause damage to the plant. There are several tools to cut them back. Just make sure they are sharp. Hand prunners work well for small to medium clumps. For huge areas some use a push mower with bagger set on highest setting and very sharp blades. Before starting with the mower make sure you have clearance from the plants crown.
Thanks. These are over 20". I don't do landscape or mow but my Toro 21 commercial has a hard time and shreds them. I think I'll dig em up and and start over.
You can propagate those to an incredible extent. Here's how I do it. Dig them up. Spray all the dirt off or as much as possible. then cut them into 3-4 inch diameter groups. Get some good shrub potting nursery mix, some 1 gallon pots and plant them up. You can use the ones you need and sell the rest. I do this with overgrown daylilies as well.
