in several spots our lawn has this black algae kind of stuff that has popped up. Think it is from watering too much too soon on compacted soil. Any suggestions on getting rid of this?

Likely to be slime mold. Let the turf dry out some and have a little patience and it should be gone. No control products needed.

40 is correct. It should go away by itself.
