Hello, I have been looking on the net for the answer to this question with no luck. I have a black fungus that grows in our lawn and flower beds and blacktop drive that i would like to id and get rid of. Yes, it can actually break up from below my blacktop drive like a lesion sore. Most of these balls are about the size of a baseball and have roots. They break open and kind of dust out after awhile. Any ideas of what these are. They are mostly dry in nature. You never know where they will pop up next. Any help is appreciated.

Puffballs are the common name-I don't know the right name, but they are probably growing on an old decomposing stump or tree root, as most fungi are saprophytes.
