Bobcat / Kawasaki motor leak

    Hi again:

    I've had this issue for a little while and it's time to address. The 14hp Kawasaki engine on my 48" Bobcat walk behind is leaking. I tried tightening up on the bolts near the seam but still a leak. I don't want to tighten more as the last thing I need is a broken bolt or cracked block.

    Attached is a pic showing where the oil escapes. Is this common? Any relatively easy way to address?

    Its fairly common...
    The sump gasket gets brittle over time...cracks...then leaks...
    Its a PITA have to remove the engine...and remove the engine sump...

    Is the engine sump as easy to remove as it looks? It looks like a oil pan best I can describe. Could it be sealed with high temp RTV instead of a gasket. I build sbc engines and in some cases we use RTV instead of the thin cheap paper gaskets. (water pump, thermostat housing, etc..)

    Further reading shows:

    - Gasket thickness is very critical as it influences shaft end play
    - Pump & governor gears must "mesh" with their drive gears when reassembling
    - Torque @ 230lbs
    - Replace the shaft seal while you're at it

    The part numbers I come up with are:

    - Crankcase cover gasket 11060-2482
    - Shaft oil seal 92049-2227

    Is that inch pounds ??

    According to the instructions posted on the link I provided: Crankcase cover bolt 26 Nm (230 lbf in)

    IIRC, one poster stated that 180 lbs was the proper torque as well.

    There's no way on that's foot pounds, that would bust the aluminum block in a heartbeat. It has to be inch pounds.

    When you get the engine open, look in the spot to see if the gasket is all hard and won't come off one of the mating surfaces. That's where it became dried out and brittle, and leaked.
