Briggs 6.5hp seized engine.

    Blah blah blah. I didn't change out the oil and the rope wont pull. I guess the engine is seized.

    The mower had been acting strange all this week and I ignored it :wall

    It after letting off the handle to cut the engine off it would sputter sputter pop and it had been getting harder and harder to start.

    Anywho, have any remedies? Heard something about WD40 and hammering the piston.

    Preferably something I can do within the next few days. Hell its just a Toro Recycler. I guess if I cant fix it myself, its a good excuse to finally get a commercial mower. :D

    I've had two in the last 7 years do that, first the gradual but constant loss of power, then nothing.

    There is something you can try, but...

    Usually what happens is parts inside the engine suffer severe damage, it's not always the cylinder walls, it could be the crankshaft lobes get scored trying to push that piston via the connecting rod too, as just another example.

    So once this type of damage happens the engine is pretty much shot.
    There are two things you can do if you have time, but you need that
    attitude of got nothing left to lose.

    1. The not-so-safe thing to try is to go ahead and get it to turn over some kind of way, it usually will, then try and start it. IF it runs keep it on idle for several hours, like a whole tank full on idle then near the end of the tank try turning it up some but wear safety goggles and stand out of its way in case something goes cracking or flying.

    2. The safer thing to do is to pull it apart, this is an interesting project and if you never get the engine working again it is still an excellent way to gain insight into these engines and how they work.
    What better way to find out than with one that's probably a dump anyhow?
    Can't do it with a new one, right?
    And you might be able to fix it, all the parts can be purchased BUT usually the damage can be and is extensive...

    Alright. Thanks a lot Topsites. I've got a few LCO buddies that I might ask if I could borrow one of their backups for a bit until I can get stuff straightened out.

    I'll probably take the sucker apart anyhow, it sounds educational and I'm a hands on learner.

    Yes yes. My girlfriend has already punished me for it.

    I'll take it apart and mess with it in my spare time. In the meantime, my LCO buddy loaned my his 21" Lawnboy and I'm thinking about ordering a Quickie 32

    I just looked, it appears the entire line of 6-7.5 hp B & S engines
    run around $2-3-400 all depends what you need.

    Whether you want to spend that kind of money is another story,
    but at least it's not $700-1000 :p

    And if you take the current one apart...
    You have to pull it to do that anyhow, it just MIGHT be
    cheaper to replace it than buying a commercial model but
    that's a tricky choice to make...

    Money really isnt an issue at this point. Im tired of these piddly homeowner units. I could bet getting more done with less effort and its time to go ahead and spend they money. I'll be buying something within the next week or so. A 32" of some sort. Demoing stuff all this week.

    Smart thinking, best to put that towards a new commercial machine. Even fitting a new engine at $300 to $400 you'd still have all the old running gear. If you have the time, pull the old one apart, just out of curiosity.
