my overall plan is to get the entire yard to be consistent, and to look as much as sod as can possibly be done. we will have some large old trees in the yard (which we love), but the grass in those areas is very thin and mossy in patches through the back yard.

any help on ways to treat it or what to do to at least start the process?

Please post some pictures, but it sounds like there is too much shade. Grass must have ~6hr of sunlight a day or you will fight moss.

You can try thinning the trees if you want both trees and grass.
