I'll let you CAnians figure this out for me and its repercussions. I'm guessing more water is going south. The story is that this water deal was secured to get two CA congress people to switch their votes to yes on the HC corruption bill.

Its true Costa and Cardoza think that by trading their votes for %25 percent water allotment with let them slip on by. Even though they both represent very liberal/progressive districts, I bet there gone in November. They both are typical political hacks, imo.

A devious mind would suggest that by denying the water to begin with it can be later used to get political support on other matters. how the water is distributed is a CA matter to a great degree. Whether it is used to support the environment or local farmers is a value decision of the people. Basically the US GOVT has made a value decision that has nothing to do with CA but to force an unpopular HC bill on the American people. This is to a great degree how water policy has been done in this country since it was created. politicians using water to buy votes on totally unrelated matters.

The way I see it anymore is that anybody who thinks that any elected politician has their constituents best interests at heart is just plain stupid. Politicians are all about themselves. Very very few give a rats A$$ about the people who put them in office. :hammerhead:

There are two parallel but separate water systems serving California, one is a state system, initiated by then Governor Pat Brown (Jerry's dad) in the 60s.

The other is the federal system.

The state system got around the 160 acre limit that used to be imposed on farmers by the federal system.

Lots of politics involved. Lots of lobbying by big agribusiness interests, including big landowners like oil companies.

I've been reading about it all in a book called The King Of California...

BTW, what do you mean by "HC corruption bill"?
Did you mean "HR", as in House Of Representatives? And specifically, H.R. 4531?

H.R. 4531 - Public Corruption Elimination Act of 2010

To amend title 5, United States Code, to deny Federal retirement benefits to an individual convicted of a felony which occurred in connection with such individual's Government employment or service, and for other purposes.

Nope.... he's saying that the additional water was allotted because two members of congress from CA agreed to vote on the health care reform bill. As crazy as that may sound I can totally see that happening... especially with the other stories of back room deals in exchange for a yes vote.

This is a thread I would relish in if I had time. I am sure Irrig8r is in the same boat. Suddenly it is 70 degrees for a whole week. We are madly doing start ups, wrapping up all the jobs that had "one last thing to do", and getting equipment ready.

This could be an endless thread. There is so much that has gone into California's water history from Politics to Mafia "type" activity. Unfortunately I can't contribute, but will keep an eye on the thread.

Buffalo Springfield, Again.

Used to play
in a rock 'n' roll band,
But they broke up.
We were young and we were wild,
It ate us up.
Now I'm not saying
who was right or wrong.

Looking out on a big green lawn,
Girls and boys
Playing in the afternoon sun,
Life's a joy
I heard an old song
playing on the radio.

Buffalo Springfield again.

I got all confused when Peter wrote HC corruption.... I thought the pending legislation had to do with reform...

Meanwhile, those two congressmen he mentions.... I heard on the radio today that 2/3 of their constituents have no private medical insurance. I guess that means that some of them are on Medicare and others on MediCAL (our version of Medicaid).... but I bet a lot of them have no insurance at all. The report also said that the two were still on the fence.

Personally, I kinda wish Bill and Hillary's plan had gone through back in the early 90's. I think a "single payer" plan is the way to go.
