I just had my 98 GMC 3500 looked at for possible transmission problems. They tell me my transmission is fine, but the cats are clogged. Is this possible with 84K miles? If so, what would the symptoms be? The truck is kind of a dog and a gas hog (454). It also seemed to miss a little under a heavy load while I was out plowing. They are pretty expensive for this truck so I want to make sure I get the diagnosis right.

My 93 F250 with a 460 and 30K had a plugged up cat that I fought and fought all summer and finally figured it out this fall. No power, and it made kind of a whooshing sound just whenever it felt like it, and that was when my power would go away. At 84K, that could be what's wrong with yours. Mine has been retired to farm duty and only plowing since, so I just hacked out the cat and muffler and put on a set of glass packs. I don't think I would recommend that if you are worried about passing any kind of emissions check though. Good luck, I hope this kinda helps.
