Are there any differences in quality of these oils? Itasco sells for about $6 per gallon and I've seen others for over $15 per gallon.

Yes, there is a difference in quality. Some will stick to the chain (desired) and avoid sling off better than others. Personally I just use stihl brand oil in the orange bottle. I pick it up at my dealer when on sale for 1.30 / quart. Stihl oil is not as expensive as everyone thinks.

I was told that the Echo oil was the best out there. I use it, it works great, I've never had any problems. I bought a case of 6 and that worked out to $6/gallon. Whether it IS the best, I don't know. I'm happy with the life of my bars and chains. They have made me great money.

I've noticed that the stuff is thick and sticky. It stays on the bar and chain and doesn't drip off. Some guys use old motor oil, or the cheapest new motor oil they can find. I figure that I can use the correct product for the application, it actually costs less, and I would figure that if it sticks to what it's supposed to protect, it's doing it's job.

I paid good money for Stihls, not to mention the bars and chains. That will be the day I pump filthy, used motor oil through there. :dizzy:

You can acutally use automatic transmission fluid for bar oil. Husqvarna specifcally said so in a manual for one of their saws at one time, I've used ATF too, and it works fine.
