What chemical can be added to/ sprayed on plants to help them absorb water better?

They are called surfactants. They break down surface tension in the soil. Cascade is a brand I have used..

Are you spraying the plants or irrigating them?

There are various cellulose and water absorbing gels. They can be used to coat the seed to help retain water. Scotts "Water Smart" with ZEBA technology.

But there is no chemical substitute for water.

For successful t-plants water with sugar water. Couple tblspoons/gal. should help... that is for leaves more than roots...

Do sugar mixtures cause plasmolysis of the roots, or encourage make it easier to absorb???

I stitched to flooding years ago and that is Primo!!! :)
