This is sad. However, I thought it might help remind everyone out there to keep a careful watch for children when your mowing.

Child Struck and Killed by Riding Lawn Mower

DALEVILLE, Va. (AP) - A 4-year-old Botetourt County boy died Thursday after his baby sitter's husband accidentally ran over him with a riding lawn mower.
Botetourt County Sheriff Ronnie Sprinkle said Justin Eric Simmons was at a home day care facility operated by Roberta and Orville Reedy when the accident occurred shortly before noon.

"It's bad ... a terrible, tragic thing. Certainly everyone's affected by it," Maj. Delbert Dudding of the Botetourt County Sheriff's Office said of those involved in the investigation.

Orville Reedy, 65, told investigators he was going up a slope on his riding mower when the engine sputtered and almost died. Reedy told police he depressed the clutch and as the mower rolled backwards he felt a bump. Stopping the mower, Reedy discovered the boy, according to Sprinkle.

Justin suffered head injuries and was flown by helicopter to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He died at the hospital, police said.

Justin and his younger brother stayed with the Reedys while their parents worked.

No charges have been filed in the case, but authorities said the investigation is continuing.

Daleville is 10 miles north of Roanoke.

Had a similar case in Ulster County NY. Grandpa was riding his 2 y/o grandson on riding tractor. The kid wanted off, so Grandpa let him off and continued mowing. Didn't see that the kid was following behind him with a toy mower and Grandpa backed up over him, killing him. Tragic!!
