My engine shut down today while mowing. The clutch appeared to have smoke coming out around it. The mower still won't start. I thought the clutch only engaged the blades. I've never had to take one apart yet so I'm not exactly sure how it works. Does this sound like bearings freezing up? Also, if the clutch is removed would the mower be able to be started and ran without the blades?

Sounds like the inner (rear) bearing locked up in the clutch, If you install some type spacer on the crankshaft to make up the thickness of the clutch and re-install the crank bolt the unit can be driven without the clutch.
